The short version

Likewise only works because people trust it with an honest answer to one question. So the important part of this policy is not what we collect — it is what we refuse to show anyone.

• Your yes or no is never shown to anybody. Not to the person you answered about, not to your host, not to anyone else at the event.
• Your contact details are shared with one person at a time, and only if you both said yes, and only once your host's reveal time has passed.
• Hosts see less than you would expect. A host never sees who said what, who matched with whom, or anyone's contact details.
• We do not sell your information. Not to anyone, for any purpose.

Everything below is the detail behind those four sentences.

What we collect

When you create an account: your email address, a password (stored hashed — we cannot read it), and a display name.

Before you can join an event: a contact method and value — an email address or a phone number. This is what is shared with someone you match with, and it is the only reason we ask for it. You may also add a profile photo and your gender.

When you join an event: your display name, contact detail and photo are copied onto your attendee record for that event. A scan token is generated so other attendees' phones can recognise your code.

During an event: which pairs met, who scanned whom, and — privately — whether each person said yes or no about the other.

If you buy a ticket: your email address and the amount. Card details go directly to Stripe and never reach us.

Automatically: ordinary server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and debugging.

How we use it

To run events: to show you who you have met, to record your answers, to work out matches, and to reveal them at the time your host chose.

To send you mail you need: verifying your address, confirming a ticket, telling you your matches are open, and telling a host what they need to know about their event.

To take payment and pay hosts, through Stripe.

To keep the service secure and working.

We do not use your information to advertise to you, and we do not build a profile of you for anyone else's benefit.

The rules that do not bend

These are enforced in the software, not merely promised here.

An answer belongs to the person who gave it. Whether you said yes or no is returned to you and to nobody else, ever, under any circumstances. There is no administrative override and no host exception.

Contact details cross only on a mutual yes. Your contact method and value leave our servers for one purpose: showing them to a person you both said yes about, after your host's reveal time. Before that moment they go nowhere.

No counts before the reveal. We will not tell you how many of your dates have answered, because at a small event that number can be worked backwards to an individual.

Hosts get no exception. A host may attend their own event, which means any figure shown to a host could be reduced by subtracting their own answers. So hosts see event-wide totals only — never who said what, never matches, never contact details, never a per-person figure, and never an attendee's photo.

Your profile photo follows your name's rule, not your contact detail's. It is visible to people you have actually had a date with at that event, because recognising who you are answering about is the point. It is never on a host's screen. Photo files are stored in a bucket that is readable by anyone holding the link, so the link is an unguessable address rather than a locked door — a real limitation, and we would rather write it down than imply more protection than exists.

Who else sees your information

We use a small number of services to run Likewise. Each gets only what it needs.

Other attendees see your display name and photo if you have had a date with them, and your contact detail only if you matched.

Your host sees that you joined, and your display name. Nothing else covered above.

We will disclose information if the law requires it — a subpoena, a court order — and we will tell you unless we are forbidden from doing so.

We have never sold personal information and we do not intend to.

Analytics

We look at how events go in aggregate: match rates, how many people answered, how long a night ran.

These figures are computed against a pseudonym, not against you. Each person is represented by a value derived from their id and a secret key, so an analytics view shows patterns without showing people. Small events are suppressed entirely rather than shown, because at low numbers an aggregate stops being anonymous.

We use no third-party analytics and no advertising trackers.

Cookies and what your browser stores

Likewise sets a session token so you stay signed in, and stores small preferences locally — your theme, whether you have dismissed something, a referral code from a link you followed.

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and there is no third-party tracker on any page.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete it, we will.

Two things stay behind, and it is fairer to say so than to discover it later:

• A revealed match is held by the other person too. Once contact details have been exchanged, we cannot reach into somebody else's copy.
• Payment records are kept for as long as tax and financial rules require.

Attendee records and answers are frozen at the reveal — after that moment they are not edited, by you or by us, because other people are relying on them.

We do not currently delete event data automatically after a period of time. If we add that, we will say so here before it takes effect.

Your choices

You can change your display name, contact detail and photo at any time in your profile. Changing them updates future events and, for your contact detail, events you have already joined.

You may ask us to: give you a copy of what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Write to privacy@likewiseonline.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Depending on where you live you may have further rights — California, Colorado, Virginia and the European Economic Area among others all give residents specific ones. We apply the rights above to everybody rather than asking where you live.

Deleting your account removes your profile and your answers. It cannot remove a match somebody else already holds.

Children

Likewise is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you believe a minor has an account, write to us and we will remove it.

Where your information is held

Likewise runs on servers in the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and processed in the US.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will say so in the app or by email before it takes effect, rather than quietly changing the date at the top.
